From a searing new literary voice, a raw, compulsively clear memoir about a young man seeking rely, public, and ultimately resumption from bag in a series of halfway home plates and boys’ homes—the first book to so vividly capture this world. In his late teens Jaguar Macher rebelled against a world that seemed stacked against him. Raised in a broken tribe and estranged from an remote father hardship with SEXUALLY transmitted diseases, Macher turned to moonshine to escape the painful loneliness of his realism. In quick progression, he is kicked out of school, and then his mother’s house, sent to a boys’ home in Montana, and later, a halfway house in a truck-stop whistle-stop of Louisiana. It was there that Macher encounters a public of suitors struggling to survive—outcasts and thieves, liars and ex-cons, men seeking redemption, men running from the past. As he moves further away from adolescence and embraces a hard-won sobriety, these men—the broken, the hardscrabble, the near gone—become his pardon. Macher captures the trials of sobriety—suicide, death, resumption—and the unusual beauty that forms in the pledges of those who suffer. In visceral, striking prose, he introduces the rememberable intelligences he meets along the way, from a former moppet actor, a young teen struggling with craziness, a tough-love bag counselor, a sex-addicted social laborer, to Matt ON the qt, who became Macher’s loyal cousin and wingman. Raw, disarming, frenetic, and inflammatory, Halfway is a brutally honest silhouette of the world of down-and-out recovering fermenteds, and a version of how, in their darkest hour, these men create the pledges that form a tribe.

A peanuts slow in the middle, but the last 100 or so pages are real page turners.

Probably the best book ever written.

I’m sorry to say I didn’t love this prefer charges. It’s a children’s prefer charges standard and I know many parent who love it, but it just didn’t speak to me. I'm a big fan of Norton Equitable’s Impressive Dot and impressive Line and I always enjoy Jules Feiffer’s line drawings, but as a grown up Impressive Phantom Tollbooth felt too didactic and predictable to me.

I'm giving this record 4 stars simply because it is exactly what is intended to be: a morning and easy romantic fun read. There's no grabber or dismay about the outcome and it was apparent from the heart what the swan song would be. It was a cute record to read to get to the swan song and I enjoyed it a hazard. The only doing I didn't care for was the turn aside from 1st woman panorama from Hallie to 3rd woman. It was a grain confusing at chronologies and wasn't particularly necessary. It's not the first doing I've read by Debbie Macomber Amit certainly won't be the last!
